The sooner you start PEP, the better. Every hour counts. If you’re prescribed PEP, you’ll need to take it daily for 28 days consistently. If you have contracted HIV, PEP can help prevent the virus from entering your body. If you already have the virus, you can use PEP to decrease the rate at which it grows in your body and eventually kill it.
It is important to note that PEP is highly effective but does not 100% prevent you from getting HIV and subsequently AIDS. PEP does not cure you from HIV and cannot be used to treat someone who has been infected with HIV. You should not use PEP if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

PEP should be started within 72 hours of possible exposure to HIV and must be completed for at least 28 days. If you do not start PEP within this time frame, it will be too late for your body to help fight the HIV infection.
